Blancpain is considered one of the oldest brands having been founded way back in 1735 by Jehan-Jaques Blancpain in Villeret, Switzerland. Blancpain paved the way to more innovative watch-making technology by producing one of the most complex mechanical watches—Blancpain 1735. The watch consisted of tourbillion, minute repeater, split chrono, and perpetual calendar.
Another notable watch from Blancpain is the Fifty Fathoms watch. This particular watch came to existence around 1950's when Blancpain met with two officers of the French Navy—Lieutenant Claude Riffaud and Captain Robert Maloubier. In need of a solid, durable watch that works well as a diver’s wristwatch, Blancpain designed Fifty Fathoms, named after its water resistant feature up to fifty fathoms or 91.45 meters. Not long after it was introduced to the public, the Fifty Fathoms became the icon for men's diving watch.
For seven generations, Blancpain was run by members of the family. After the last member of the Blancpain family died, Andre Leal and Betty Fiechter took over the company. Now a part of the Swatch Group, Blancpain still prides itself of its longstanding tradition of creating mechanical watches of classic designs and impressive technologies.
While other brands manufacture thousands of watches a day, Blancpain releases about 10,000 watches per year. Some observers may arrive at the conclusion that Blancpain has lost its touch and cannot keep up with the rest of the industry. However, true lovers of luxury timepieces acknowledge the fact that such craftsmanship takes time and the wait, cliché as it may sound, is well worth it.
