When you hear of Oyster, there is a high probability that the first thing you think of is the delectable seafood served in many restaurants all over the world. If you are an avid watch collector, however, chances are you will think of the watch brand which made its debut during the early 1920s.

The Oyster is one of the most famous watches under the Rolex brand. In fact, it is so popular that it deserves a page of its own rather than just being mentioned in a sentence or two. The Oyster watch came to existence at a time when pocket watches were the norm. Mr. Hans Wilsdorf, a man of vision and passion, dreamed of creating a wrist watch. So when he struck an agreement with Aegler, a Swiss watchmaking company, he wasted no time and started making headway in turning his idea into a reality. He invented the screw crown which made the case waterproof and resistant to dust and moisture as well. This featured was advertised by a Rolex watch in a fish tank.

It was when the double-locking crown was invented that the Oyster watch was produced. The new crown produced an airtight seal which proved to be an even more capable barrier against water, moisture and dust. As part of its marketing campaign, Mercedes Gleitze, an English swimmer, wore an Oyster watch during one of her swims. After 23.69 miles, the Oyster watch was still in perfect working condition – instantly making it a legend.

Rolex continued to produce watches under the Oyster brand to commemorate its success back in the mid to late 20th century. There is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner. It is a line of watches specifically designed for divers. The first ever Submariner made was unveiled to the public in 1954. Now, it is considered as a classic timepiece widely recognized for its resistance to water.

Another one is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea-Dweller. Again, it is a line marketed to divers. Since its creation in 1967 up to now, the functions of the line only get better and better with the latest having an underwater diving depth rating of 12,800 feet.

We may not be divers but appreciate beautifully crafted watches such as Rolex's Oyster. WeBuyWatches.com brokers more Rolex watches than all of our competitors combined. Our brokers have buyers waiting to purchase your Oyster watch. Begin the process by filling out our Free Appraisal Form.
