The late Giovanni Panerai may not have lived long enough to witness the success Panerai is enjoying today. It is safe to assume, however, that when he created the watchmaking company in Florence back in 1860, he fully expected it to become one of the world's most liked brands.

By creating watches that are simply designed, water resistant, and with illuminated dials which made reading time underwater easy, Panerai became the official watch supplier of the Royal Italian Navy during its early years.

Seeing the need for more accurate timekeeping instruments, the company ventured into producing precision timepieces which, later on, were used during the Second World War. A case in point being Panerai's Radiomir and Luminor watches. These were used by the Italian commando frogmen to execute their mission of sinking Allied naval vessels. Both watches were created with high accuracy in mind. When the task was properly carried over, it cemented the relationship between Panerai and the Italian Marina Military.

In 1938, Panerai was contracted to create watches exclusive to the Marina Military. These wrist-worn diving instruments, unfortunately, were no longer availed by the Italian Navy after 1993. The main reasons behind the discontinuation were the expenses and the fact that they did not meet the specifications set by the navy.

When the Italian Marina Militaire stopped using the Panerai diving watches, the company decided to sell it to the public market. The public, on the other hand, were not that interested. The collection became almost totally obscure, before it caught the eyes of Sylvester Stallone which lead to the “rebirth” of Panerai.

With the actor Sylvester Stallone as one of the brand's avid fans, Panerai became known for its sports watches. When Panerai became the official timekeeper for Ferrari, the brand cemented its legacy among watch and car enthusiasts. Even the ladies showed particular interest to the brand which mostly releases watches for men.
