Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, Patek Philippe is one of the finest luxury watch manufacturers in the world with a rich history to its name. The company started when two Polish watchmakers—Antoni Norbert Patek and Franciszek Czapek—began producing pocket watches in 1839. The partnership between the two only lasted until 1844. However, with his passion for watchmaking, Patek continued creating watches. A year after he separated with Czapek, Patek began associating with Adrien Philippe, a French watchmaker known for his invention of the keyless winding mechanism. Six years after the two joined forces, Patek Philippe & Co. came to existence.

By 1868, Patek Philippe released their very first wristwatch. From then on, they continued manufacturing watches with functions like perpetual calendar, chronograph, split-seconds hand, and minute repeater.

As expected from Swiss watchmaking companies, nearly all watches produced by Patek Philippe were mechanical. For a while the company was content with the way things were. But things were not like that for a long time. Soon enough, Patek Philippe released quartz watches and a digital wrist watch as well. It was noted by many that Patek Philippe creates its own watch components.

Patek Philippe has a great following. Some of the brand's patrons were of royalty. This can be traced back to 1851 when Queen Victoria showed her appreciation to Patek Philippe watches. Two of the watches exclusively made for her were a key-wound watch worn in a pendant style and a watch suspended from a brooch made of diamond and enamel. Other royalties who adorned the brand were the king of Denmark, Christian IX, king of Italy, Victor-Emanuel III, and prince of Egypt, Hussein Kamal.

For its 150th anniversary, Patek Philippe unveiled the Calibre 89. Consisting of 33 complications like thermometer, time of sunrise, sidereal time, equation of time, date of Easter, and a feature which enabled it to add a day to February every leap year, it is not surprising when Calibre 89 was recognized as one of the most complicated mechanical watches.
