What happens when your father, along with his friends, is familiar with horology and you have an obvious talent for watchmaking? You might end up like Ulysse Nardin, one of the most gifted watchmakers back in the 1840s. He founded a watchmaking company in Le Locle, Switzerland in 1846 and registered it under his own name. Even to this date, Ulysse Nardin is one of the world's most respected brands when it comes to luxury watches.

Whereas many luxury watch brands have been made famous for aviator watches, Ulysse Nardin made its name with marine chronometers. These mechanical timepieces are extremely precise, thus suitable companions to merchant and military ships. The most popular marine chronometer at that time was the M.Gr.F, a model created by Ulysse Nardin. It was said that there were about 4,540 certificates issued for marine chronometers and 4,324 of those were released to Ulysse Nardin.

Although Ulysse Nardin's marine chronometers can be considered as its ticket to success, the brand had ventured into other types of watches by 1983. After the acquisition of the company by Rolf Schnyder, Ulysse Nardin underwent some changes. The design team, in association with Dr. Ludwig Oechslin and Schnyder, began producing complex watches made out of up-to-date materials and new manufacturing techniques.

Two years later, Ulysse Nardin launched its first watch since it was acquired. The Astrolabium Galileo Galilei was a sure hit to people interested in astronomy. The watch displayed the orbits and eclipses of both sun and moon, the positions of some major starts, and of course, the local and the solar time. In 1989, the watch was mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records as the most functional watch. Other astronomical watches released by Ulysse Nardin were Planetarium Copernicus in 1988 and Tellurium Johannes Kepler in 1992. All three watches were collectively known as the Trilogy of Time.

Ulysse Nardin is also famous for other complicated watches such as the GMT Perpetual, which has a perpetual calendar and a feature which enables to adjust the time for those who travel around the globe, and the Freak Blue Phantom, a tourbillon watch without a crown.
