Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in 1896 when Esther Arpels, the daughter of a precious stone dealer Salomon, got married to Alfred Van Cleef, a person coming from a family of steel merchants. As what can be expected from the union of two families who make a living from gems and steels, father and son-in-law decided to be in the jewelry business that same year. It took a while but they finally had the Van Cleef & Arpels trademark registered in 1906. Soon after, Van Cleef's brothers-in-law—Salomon, Jules, and Louis—joined in the venture.
Even though Van Cleef died in 1938, Van Cleef & Arpels continued to thrive. In fact, the company was well on its way to becoming one of the most credible names in the industry. They opened shops in places like Deauville, Nice, and Monte-Carlo. By 1942, the family emigrated to the United States of America and decided to open another boutique in New York, on 5th Avenue, cementing Van Cleef & Arpels's status as a high end jewelry company. It was not long before the company had shops in Asian countries like Japan and China as well.
While Van Cleef & Arpels is known mainly for its jewelry collection, there is no doubt that watches under the brand are premium quality.
